Developmental Editing

Home /Developmental Editing

So you’ve written a book but you don’t know whether it’s going to be a bestseller or go unpublished? Unsure if the finished product has turned out the way you thought? Maybe you’re not sure how well the plot is working? Or if the characters are ringing true?

This is probably where developmental editing will help you. This is a high-level, structural edit where I point out issues with the overall plot, pace, characters, chapterisation and layout of the book.

An issue with your plot is where the story loses steam in the middle or starts off slow although it ends with a bang, or where you have a cracker of a story for the most part but the ending lets your down. I will highlight in which portions this issue is creeping in and what kind of re-work or re-thinking is required.

A flimsy plot, verbose or tedious language, or illogical chapterisation and section breaks will slow down the pace of the book. This needs to be identified and rectified in a specific manner.
Are your characters well-fleshed out and believable? Are they conveying what you intended them to? Is one or more of them not required, and can be done away with? I will delve into the nuances of the characters you have created and provide you the benefit of an experienced editor’s eye (not to mention, an eclectic reader’s eye) to help you create memorable, richly-fleshed out characters who take your story to completion.

If there is an inconsistent usage of a motif or theme, or potentially controversial or disrespectful usage, I will point this out in my sensitivity check. I try to never project my own beliefs onto a manuscript but will bring to the fore a balanced viewpoint and encourage the author to rethink their biases. To reiterate, this is a high-level edit, although I may even carry out sentence-level edits. This is not intended to correct the grammar or language.
My guarantees: I will provide actionable and specific comments to address these aspects. I will make it as easy as possible for you make the necessary changes, including by pointing out specific portions (chapters or paragraphs or sentences) that need change.

I have a great commercial mindset and I want your book to perform the best it can in terms of both literary value and readability. No matter what you have written – whether it’s a pulpy romance or an epic fantasy or a political thriller – you can trust that I will appreciate the nuances of the genre and of your unique voice.
